Georges Leygues was a French light cruiser of the La Galissonnière class. During World War II, she served with both Vichy France and Allies. She was named for the prominent 19th and 20th-century French politician Georges Leygues. It came into service on November 15, 1937.  When the Second World War broke out in Europe, it was deployed in the Atlantic Ocean to fight against German convoys. On April 24, 1940, it was sent to the port of Mers-el-Kebir but escaped the attack of the British Royal Navy on July 3rd.

It is placed under the command of Allied forces and conducts patrols in the Atlantic Ocean following the Allied landing in North Africa as part of Operation Torch. After undergoing renovations in the port of Philadelphia until October 1943, it returned to its home port of Dakar. Alongside the French cruiser Montcalm, it participated in Operation Neptune off the coast of Port-en-Bessin, where on June 6, 1944, it bombed the German positions at Omaha Beach. It also participated in the Longues-sur-Mer battery bombing on D-Day and stayed in the Bay of Seine until June 10. The cruiser Georges Leygues, which took part in the landing in Provence in August 1944, eventually located the port of Toulon on September 13, 1944. It then conducted multiple bombardments of Italy's strongholds, most notably in the Genoa region in March 1945. Remodelled in Casablanca following the war, the Georges Leygues cruiser took part in the 1954 bombing campaigns in Indochina and the 1956 Suez Canal capture.
