Development of the Namer heavyweight armoured infantry fighting vehicle (AIFV) commenced in July 2007 as part of the IDF's five-year armoured infantry fighting vehicle (AIFV) programme. The programme aims to modernise and strengthen the IDF ground forces through the implementation of cutting-edge technologies and equipment. The Namer AIFV was unveiled to the public in early 2008 and entered production in April 2008, following approval from the IDF chief of staff and funding for the pilot production of 15 tracked vehicles.

The vehicle is equipped with a remotely operated weapon station and multiple smoke canisters embedded within the armour.
