Named for Rear Admiral Thomas Holdep Stevens III, the USS Stevens DD-479 is a destroyer of the Fletcher class in the US Navy. December 30, 1941, marked the start of construction, which was finished on June 24, 1942, and put into service on February 1, 1943. The Stevens, one of the first US Navy destroyers to be built, destroyed the second torpedo launch tube and the third gun position, refurbished the rear superstructure, and installed a water jet catapult behind the second chimney to recover seaplane equipment, including cranes.
